The tall, slender tower that stands on the square is one of the most important symbols of Florence. It’s 94 meters high and it is not precisely centered in the building because Arnolfo di Cambio incorporated the ancient tower of the the previous building as the substructure of the new tower into its facade. The Arnolfo Tower (this is its name) contains two small cells, that, at different times, imprisoned Cosimo de' Medici (1435) and Girolamo Savonarola (1498).
